Angel Cakes

Now Hiring! Again!

Entry posted January 5th, 2021

Update Jan 21: We are currently interviewing candidates and not accepting new applications at this time.

Angel Cakes ( is a cupcake bakery in Oakland located between West Oakland BART and Jack London Square, in the historic Gingerbread House building. We also make a variety of cookies, cakes, cake pops, and other baked goods. We have a loyal customer base and have been able to make it through the pandemic rollercoaster so far.

I’m currently looking for someone to join our small team and help us level up. This could lead to a management-type position for the right person. While on paper the primary responsibilities of this role are decorating cupcakes and providing customer service, what I’m really look for is someone interested in all aspects of running the business, and who will excel at managing workflow, prioritizing tasks, and anticipating needs in an often hectic and sometimes chaotic workspace. I am a hands-on owner and I am in the bakery working alongside staff for most of the work week.

This position is 30+ hours and the specific schedule is negotiable. Available shifts are Tuesday to Sunday. Weekday shifts are approximately 1030 am to 630 pm, and weekend shifts are 930 am to 230 pm, exact shifts TBD.

Angel Cakes can be very busy at times and the ideal candidate would feel at ease managing, as part of a team, a stream of walk-in customers, phone calls, and third-party delivery apps. The ability to triage and manage time efficiently is essential, as is the skill of interacting with different customer personalities. We have a wonderful community of loyal customers and interacting with them is a highlight of the job – we strive to help folks feel welcome and comfortable even in the midst of pandemic chaos. If talking to customers or managing several different things that need your attention at once feels stressful, this is not the job for you.

Starting wage during training is $17/hr plus tips (an additional $2-4 per hour). We also provide paid lunch breaks, sick time, and some paid holidays. There is opportunity to learn new skills (baking and beyond baking), and every staff person has the chance to create their own signature cupcake flavors.  Since we are a small staff, everyone (including me) helps with dishes, cleaning, and other dirty work.

No decorating or baking experience is necessary, but experience in a retail environment, at another bakery, or as a home baker is helpful. Paid training will be provided.

Responsibilities for this position could include:
- Assisting customers at the counter/pickup window and over the phone
- Fulfilling orders from third-party apps like Caviar and Grubhub
- Cash handling
- Opening/closing duties
- Baking cupcakes and cookies
- Posting to our social media accounts
- Decorating cupcakes
- Making frostings, fillings, and toppings
- Washing dishes, mopping, and other cleaning tasks
- Maintaining the overall organization and cleanliness of your area

Candidates should:
- Be able to stand for several hours
- Be able to lift a 50 lb bag of flour or sugar
- Feel comfortable working on your own without direct supervision
- Enjoy interacting with customers at the front counter/pickup window and on the phone
- Commit to being on time for shifts
- Have a current driver’s license
- Have definite opinions and ideas about what dessert should look and taste like
- Enjoy dessert! If you don’t like sweets this is not a great fit for you!

Covid Protocols
We follow all county guidelines for COVID safety for takeout restaurants, including wearing masks and limiting the number of customers in the store at one time. I will be conducting first interviews for this position over the phone, and will include a thorough discussion of our Covid protocols.

Angel Cakes is not wheelchair accessible at this time. We offer service to folks with mobility challenges through home delivery and anyone who is not able to enter the store can call for service using the doorbell at the front door or by calling the store phone.

Angel Cakes is a small shop and as the owner, I strive to create an environment where everyone (staff AND customers) feels included, valued, and respected. I believe that Black Lives Matter and that every person has the right to choose their own gender identity and gender expression. I strive to reduce waste through limiting use of plastics and choosing products that are gentle on the environment. I do my best to be a good neighbor and community member through donating to and providing desserts for various social justice efforts. I can provide references from current and former employees.

To apply for this position, please email me, Jen Angel, with some information on why you would like this position and some things about your work history.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
