About Us

Angel Cakes is a women-owned-and-operated small-batch bakery in Oakland. We specialize in cupcakes and cakes, but we also make cookies, bars, and other baked goods. We are located between Jack London Square and the Howard Terminal. While primarily a retail bakery, we also provide desserts for events from intimate birthdays to large weddings and corporate events.

What makes us different is our large menu of over 120 flavors - we LOVE experimenting with new and unusual combinations! It keeps things interesting and allows us to use the freshest ingredients available. Most of our cake flavors can be made vegan and gluten free, however we are not an allergen-free bakery. We do our best to source ingredients locally and ethically.  

Jen Angel created Angel Cakes in 2008, and our retail shop opened on 5th Street in Oakland in March 2016. Jen learned practically everything she knew from her mom, Pat. Although Jen was always a baker, before cupcaking full-time she worked as an independent media and community activist. Jen passed away in February 2023. The team of skilled bakers and decorators she trained now run the shop, keeping her legacy alive. Jen's favorite flavors were chocolate peanut butter and Meyer lemon with passion fruit cream (though secretly she loved chocolate chip cookies the most).

Angel Cakes is a small shop and the team strives to create an environment where everyone feels included, valued, and respected. They believe Black Lives Matter and that every person has the right to choose their own gender identity and gender expression. As a shop we strive to reduce waste through limiting use of plastics and choosing products that are gentle on the environment. We do our best to be good neighbors and community members through donating to and providing desserts for various social justice efforts, particularly in the areas of environmental justice, housing, and criminal justice reform.
